Everyone thinks when they see the perfect Instagram photo in their feed that the person must have the best camera on the market. However, this is just not true. Ten years ago, this may have been more the case as cameras have not only seen a massive leap forward in technology, but also in making them more affordable to the consumer.
Nowadays it is easier than ever to take that perfect photo. Of course there are ways to make your photography better like learning the best practices and techniques that will make your photos more aesthetically pleasing. Though taking somebody with the same amount of knowledge and giving them two pieces of equipment from different ends of the spectrum in terms of quality (which generally also means price point as well) and allowing them to take the same photo, the untrained eye will most likely not be able to tell the difference.
In fact, the single biggest thing you are seeing in a lot of these Instagram photos that will blow your mind away comes in the post-processing of the photo. Which means you will definitely want to make sure your camera takes RAW photos that store more information to allow you to edit your photos. If you are a travel blogger, this generally means you will want a DSLR or Mirrorless camera in your backpack for your next trip.
What Camera Do Bloggers Use For Instagram
The truth. They use a wide variety of cameras. Some even still use the camera in their phone to document their travels. For most, it is the camera that they have become comfortable with or maybe even the first camera they bought. For others, it is the next best thing that has come out onto the market. So, what camera do bloggers use for Instagram?
It is important to note that there are cameras for certain people based on what they feel comfortable with using, what brand they like, and what they want to be able to do with their camera. Some want their camera to take good photos AND video. Some care less about the video which will save them a few dollars on their purchases. While others are just loyal to a certain brand like we are to our Canon DSLRs.
Here are some highlighted Instagram bloggers and what cameras they use:
- Dave and Deb of The Planet D use a Sony Alpha A7RII.
- Alesha and Jarryd of Nomadasaurus opt for the Sony Alpha A7RII.
What is the Best Camera for Travel Bloggers
It is a question that is asked again and again by everyone in the travel world. Everyone has their own opinions about what the best camera for travel bloggers is. Some have chosen their favorites from when they first started. Some products are more popular than others and have really held a strong market share for their superior technology and product. For what it is worth, I have compiled a list of camera equipment that is found in my bag when I go traveling. Here is a list of what I believe to be the…
Cameras for Travel Bloggers
Canon dSLR Cameras
GoPro Action Cameras
Image Stabilizer – Gimbals
Why Canon? I still have my first Canon camera from when I was 13 years old. Works like a charm, but the technology is outdated. However, the reliability of Canon cameras is why I like them the most. Not to mention I like the brand, and it was the first thing I ever laid my hands on when I became serious about cameras.
For those interested in getting into the world of dSLR cameras, the products below are great for beginners. They are also what I first purchased, and what I still have today.
Entry Level DSLR Package
If you are just getting started in the world of photography and want to start to get some quality photographs under your belt and understand the workings of a camera, then you may not want to break the bank and get an entry level package. As we had mentioned earlier, Canon is our favorite brand and it is what we recommend when getting started for their quality at a good price point.
Advanced Level DSLR
If you want to take the leap and bite the bullet to get a full frame DSLR, perhaps this is the Canon for you.
Comparable in quality to DSLR cameras and still a fairly new addition to this market, mirrorless cameras exploded in popularity due to their size compared to a DSLR camera. They also allow you to exchange lenses like a DSLR does. This makes them extremely versatile in a compact body. Although Canon has a mirrorless camera on the market, they were a little bit late to the party. Here is a suggestion for an entry-level Sony mirrorless camera (advanced level is linked above below the Instagram posts), as they have done a great job with their lineup.
DSLR and mirrorless cameras, despite their quality, do not provide one thing. Portability. This can be extremely important, especially for travel bloggers. There is a way around this and that would be to get an action camera. Combine high quality photos with high quality video in a compact body that you can slip into your pocket and you have an action camera.
When it comes to action cameras, why not go with the best in the game. I now have two GoPros, the Hero +LCD and the new Hero 5. Both are amazing, but the Hero 5 is incredible. The built-in image stabilizer, 4K image resolution, and being able to shoot images in RAW files so you can edit them with all of their detail later. Now there is this amazing GoPro 7 on the market that allows you to live stream, has unbeatable built-in image stabilization, voice commands, and so much more available to it! It is really the must have action camera on the market right now.
GoPro Hero 7
Another brand name to add to the list that is dominating the market. DJI is the go-to for drones with cameras these days. I purchased a DJI Phantom 3 Advanced just a year ago, and I have not looked back. Being able to get those shots from the sky adds a whole other element to your photos and videos. Make sure to do your research when traveling and avoid places near airports when flying. Mastering the flight of a drone takes practice, and there are so many ways you can use it to your advantage. The DJI Mavic Pro is perfect for travelers, as you can fold it up to a size that practically fits into your pocket! Perfect for the traveler that wants a quality drone, but is short on space. And even better is the newly released Spark!
Portable and 4K video? This is your drone.
Are you willing to compromises slightly on image quality in exchange for portability? Then this is your drone.
Image quality is important when making travel videos. Unfortunately, shaky footage will just not do. However, we now have the technology to make it affordable enough to make your videos smooth. From action camera and cellphone gimbals all the way to dSLR gimbals, there are gimbals for you to make your video as smooth as butter. Feiyu Tech has affordable prices for their gimbals and they fit most action cameras on the market. If you have a GoPro Hero 5, invest in the newly released G5 series. Alternatively, DJI also has a good product available with their OSMO series gimbals. If you want to save money, and you believe your cellphones camera quality is good, you can purchase the mobile version to stabilize the video on your phone. Otherwise, spend some more money to get the OSMO+ with its built in camera.
DJI OSMO Pocket
If you want something small that also has a camera already attached and ready to go, this is the camera for you if you also need that stability for smooth video.
A staple of DJI stability with a built in camera and allowing your phone to be attached as the viewport to what you are filming.
Feiyu Tech G5
This is what we use in combination with our Go Pro. It works fairly well, and we just could not find a better price on something that would work for us at the time of our purchase.
